   APL Visitor Guide – Driving Directions

APL is located on Johns Hopkins Road, approximately 1/2 mile west of U.S. Route 29.
There are several visitor entrances.

  • Montpelier Rd.: Montpelier Research Park (APL offices), 0.4 miles from Rt. 29.
  • Pond Rd.: Credit Union, Kossiakoff Center, and East Campus, 0.6 miles from Rt. 29.
  • APL Drive: Main Laboratory Entrance, 0.8 miles from Rt. 29.
  • Building 26 (Warfare Analysis Laboratory): Right turn onto Sanner Rd., second right entrance, West Campus
  • Building 23 (Space Integration Test Facility): Right turn onto Sanner Rd., 0.8 miles from Johns Hopkins Road, right turn to building 23, North Campus

From the Baltimore Area

  1. Take I-95 South;
  2. From the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) intersection
  3. Go 13 miles and take Columbia exit (MD Rt. 32 West)
  4. Go 2.5 miles and take Washington DC exit (U.S. Rt. 29 South)
  5. Go 1.5 miles and take Johns Hopkins Rd.
  6. Exit onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

From the Washington DC and the Capital Beltway (I-495)

  1. Take I-95 North toward Baltimore
  2. Go 8 miles and take MD Rt. 216 West (toward Scaggsville)
  3. Go 1.2 miles, turn right onto Leishear Rd.
  4. Go 0.8 miles, turn left onto Gorman Rd.
  5. Go 0.7 miles, cross traffic circle and bridge over U.S. Rt. 29
  6. Road name changes to Johns Hopkins Road
  7. APL is on the right about a 1/2 mile past Rt. 29

Alternate Washington DC/Capital Beltway Route:

  1. From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take I-95 North toward Baltimore
  2. Go 10 miles and take Columbia exit (MD Rt. 32 West)
  3. Go 2.5 miles and take Washington DC exit (U.S. Rt. 29 South)
  4. Go 1.5 miles and take Johns Hopkins Rd.
  5. Exit onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

Alternate Washington DC/Capital Beltway Route:

  1. From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take U.S. Rt. 29 North (Colesville Rd.) 10 miles and follow signs for the turn onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

From the Baltimore-Washington International Airport

  1. Take I-195 to I-95 South
  2. Go 10 miles and take Columbia exit (MD Rt. 32 West)
  3. Go 2.5 miles and take Washington DC exit (U.S. Rt. 29 South)
  4. Go 1.5 miles and take Johns Hopkins Rd.
  5. Exit onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

From the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

  1. Take the George Washington Memorial Pkwy North
  2. Go 16 miles and take the Capital Beltway (I-495) East or North toward Baltimore
  3. Go 15 miles and take I-95 North toward Baltimore
  4. Go 10 miles and take Columbia exit (MD Rt. 32 West)
  5. Go 2.5 miles and take Washington DC exit (U.S. Rt. 29 South)
  6. Go 1.5 miles and take Johns Hopkins Rd.
  7. Exit onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

From the Washington Dulles International Airport

  1. Dulles Airport Access Road to the Capital Beltway (I-495) East or North toward Baltimore
  2. Go 18 miles and take I-95 North toward Baltimore
  3. Go 10 miles and take Columbia exit (MD Rt. 32 West)
  4. Go 2.5 miles and take Washington DC exit (U.S. Rt. 29 South)
  5. Go 1.5 miles and take Johns Hopkins Rd.
  6. Exit onto Johns Hopkins Rd.

From the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center

  1. Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) North approx. 10 miles
  2. Exit on Rt 32 West, approx. 5 miles
  3. Exit on Rt. 29 South
  4. Go 1.5 miles and bear right to Johns Hopkins Rd.
